The Fulbright foreign scholarship is a non degree programme introduced by the Public Affairs Section of the United States Mission in Nigeria to offer faculty members opportunity to conduct a nine month research at a U.S. academic or research institution under the full sponsorship of the United States government.
Explaining further on the scholarship programme, Chairman, Fulbright Alumni Association, University of Nigeria, Nsukka chapter, Engr. Dr Chigbo Mgbemene, said that the scholarship application usually begins from the month of March and stops on June 1 of every year.
According to him, the application form can be accessed on-line with the link;http://apply.embark.com/student/fulbright/scholars, while the application instruction can be accessed through; www.cies.org/vs_scholars. He advised applicants to select “visiting researcher” as their degree objective while filling the application form.
Further, Dr Mgbemene explained that once an application is selected, the agency in charge of the programme takes over the financial responsibility of the favoured person, including his travelling expenses, accommodation and research costs.
Besides the benefit of personal development enjoyed by beneficiaries of the programme, Dr Mgbemene said that the programme offers opportunity for scholars to interact and make contacts with other scholars from different parts of the world. He added that Fulbright scholars maintain regular link with American Embassy.
Dr Mgbemene said that there were over 16 Fulbright scholars in the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. He therefore called on interested faculty members to avail themselves of the opportunity offered by the scholarship programme to improve their research skills and enhance their linkages with other scholars across the globe.
