President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan on Thursday 28th November 2013 has directed all striking lecturers of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to call off their four months old strike and return to classroom else risk losing their Job. The president went ahead to issue them a stipulated deadline of 4th December 2013, directing that all lecturers who fails to resume on or before the above date should consider their position vacant.
Mr. President made this declaration following the outcome of the union’s latest demands which some Federal Government agents including the Education Minister, Barr. Nyesom Wike considered outrageous. The three conditions were payment of four months salaries which accumulated during the period of the strike; immediate implementation of the N1.2 trillion offered by the government to public universities, starting with the release of N100 billion this year and the balance of N1.1 trillion to be spread over five years from 2014.
We also brought you a report earlier that the Pro-Chancellors of Nigerian Federal Universities, on Wednesday also directed all tertiary institutions involved in the ASUU strike to resume academic activities.
From all of us here at Myedu Nigeria, we think ASUU is loosing the battle to the Federal Government as rumours also has it that 60% of the Union members are in support of the call off.
